R.T. Griffis & Sons Lumber Co. History/About

Past

• The date was August 23, 1943, and H. Dudley Griffis and his sons, R.T. Griffis and Jack Griffis, purchased a lumber yard located on 1 Beech Street in Montrose, PA. Along with their new company , they added a contracting business and a hardware store,“Traders Electric” which was at the corner of Public Avenue and Church Street.


• In the early 50’s their contracting business bloomed when they began building several of the local schools, such as: Clifford Elementary, Liberty High School, Tunkhannock High School and Wyalusing High School, just to name a few.

• In1954 they split the company, H.D. and R.T. staying with the contracting business and the lumber yard on Beech Street, while “Trader Jack” took over Trader’s Electric on Public Avenue.
• In 1958 H.D. Griffis retired and R.T. Griffis’ two sons, Stanley and Ken began working full time.
• January 6, 1968, a vivid date in Stanley’s memory, proved disastrous when the lumber yard office burned to the ground. A new office was built at the lumber yard where it presently resides.
• In 1980 the name of the business was officially changed to Robert T. Griffis and Sons Inc.

Present

• Today,“Griffis Lumber” remains a family owned and operated business, specializing in lumber and building supplies. With the recent retirement of Stanley Griffis, his daughter Susan Griffis McNamara has taken on the business, representing the fourth generation of Griffis family owners and operators. Although you still may see Stanley around the yard, from time to time, you’re more likely to find him on the golf course taking full advantage of his recent retirement.

Future

• The future of Robert T. Griffis and Sons, Inc. is centered around the commitment to providing the same personal service and quality product that has been the foundation for the company since 1943.
• It is the goal of the company to provide a contemporary and state of the art product line to suit the ever changing needs of its loyal customers, while still maintaining the integrity of what the company was founded upon.
• Green building and energy efficiency are a major focus for the future of the industry, and“Griffis Lumber” has been on the cutting edge of incorporating this environmentally conscious way of building into their company way of life.
